The quintessential teaching of Luke Skywalker can be summed up with the maxim: “When given two alternatives, make the third choice.”
This enlightened philosophy was first put into practice with the confrontation of Emperor Palpatine, and Darth Vader. Vader, formally Anakin Skywalker, Luke's father was a great evil and apprentice to the Sith Lord Darth Sidious, who the Galaxy knew as Emperor Palpatine. On one side Luke was instructed by his masters to destroy Vader, on the other side was the temptation to join sides with him. Given these two alternatives, Luke Skywalker made the third choice and reached out to redeem his father, who turned from the Dark Side, and was once again Anakin Skywalker who destroyed the Sith by killing Darth Sidious and bringing balance to the Force. This would not have been possible without the love of a son, and the wisdom of a Jedi.
